There are a few different blog posts and resources out there which answer the question ‘which is the best eco friendly water bottle’, but often those sites showcase plastic botties on the basis you are going to reuse them. This is not my definition of eco friendly.
I am going to show you our list of eco friendly water bottles. By my definition that means absolutely zero plastic, with only non-toxic materials used.
So, in no particular order, here are my suggestions for you:
- Waterdrop Bamboo & Steel Bottle
Why do I like the Waterdrop Bamboo & Steel bottle? Well, firstly because it looks cool. Moving to a fully zero waste life doesn’t need to look bad.
→ Elegant drinking bottle made of double-walled
→ It is available in 500ml and 1l
→ Vacuum insulated, keeps cool for 24 hours, warm for 12 hours
→ Durable, sustainable and easy to clean
→ Leak-proof due to special bamboo closure
This is made of stainless steel and bamboo. No plastic.
- Sustainable Bamboo Water Bottle
Another zero plastic water bottle. This water bottle is again made from bamboo and stainless steel. Additionally though, this water bottle can be personalised - so it’s potentially a great gift for friends or family.
Key Features (straight from their site):
“A sustainably sourced bamboo water bottle with a stainless steel double wall inside to keep your drink ice cold for up to 4 hours. The bottle and lid is guaranteed not to leak. Reuse and refill the water bottle as much as you need.
Sustainably sourced farmed bamboo with a double-walled stainless steel inner case.”
- Bambaw Stainless Steel Reusable Water Bottle
The only thing we don’t like about this is the fact it’s sourced in China, and therefore it becomes difficult to track the practices and processes behind creating this bottle.
But, if we leave that to one side for the minute - we have a nice zero-waste alternative to plastic bottles.
The bottle features a bamboo lid so your water won’t come into contact with any plastics, and the opening is big enough to add ice cubes or infuse fruits in your water. Completely BPA free and leak proof, this stainless steel water bottle is great for keeping you hydrated on the go.
The final callout here is the fact they donate a % of their profits to the ‘plastic soup foundation’ charity.
- 500ml Sequoia Wood Insulated Bottle
Another very good looking eco friendly water bottle.
Similar to water bottle #1 and #3, this is a stainless steel lining - which negates the need to use any type of plastic lining. They specifically call out the following:
“Production, packaging and transportation of the bottles is carbon neutral and every time you use your bottle instead of buying a plastic one (or plastic lined paper cup) you save more carbon being emitted 24 bottles is an Italian brand striving to rid the world of plastic bottles by producing a super lightweight, high quality, well designed alternative.”
I like the fact they not only care about the production of the bottle, but the way it is transported to have as little impact as possible on the planet.
- Collapsible Silicone Water Bottle
Super simple, yet really functional.
Plastic is an incredible material - which is why it gained such popularity - but now we know it’s flaws, and we want to find alternatives.
Silicone, for now, is a good alternative (there is a thread on this forum discussing silicone here), and that’s why we are sharing this bottle.
It’s really versatile, and can be ‘collapsed’ to fit into a handbag/bag really easily.
It is worth calling out that this water bottle is made of medical grade (better than food grade) BPA-free silica gel and a non-toxic, odorless material; approved by the FDA in the U.S.
Whilst silicone doesn’t really biodegrade any quicker than plastic, what we do know is that when it does - it does not release any micro toxins - which is not the case with plastic.
So, whilst I advise you stick to bamboo/steel if you want to go completely eco-friendly/zero-waste - silicone is a safer replacement if you are looking for a direct replacement to plastic.
I hope you enjoy the list, and if you buy one - don’t forget to come back and let us know your own experience! ♻️👍🏼🍼
